About

Naum Sint Nicolaas is a Dutch artist based in Ghent, Belgium. Growing up in a bilingual family with different roots, Naum absorbed this diverse cultural background into his art from a young age. In his teenage years he came into contact with different religions, creeds and philosophies and explored the incredible diversity of the Rabot quarter in Ghent. Later he studied the art and culture of many Eastern- and Western European traditions by exploring cultural festivals and programs in Belgium, Germany, Great-Britain and Greece. Naum also enjoys playing double bass and singing and is the bassist and secondary vocalist in the klezmer bands  “Klezmotivn” and “Broygeztants”

Artist Statement

My work explores different cultural backgrounds, folk tales and stories via my own imagination. With influences as diverse as Bruegel and Chagall, my art tells personal stories, transforming them into fantastical fairy tales.

Ever since I was a child my head was filled with wonderful stories of heroes, villains and bizarre monsters. I always wanted to share this imaginary world with other people. As I grew older, I realised that not everything can be portrayed as fantastical and magical and started to incorporate more sober and questioning work, that focuses on modern societal problems.

Ultimately, I want to send out a message of hope and discovery, both internal and external, as I believe hope and genuine empathy can help a lot in a modern divided world.
